Seven Foster Grandparent volunteers were recognized for their service with a program at an inservice meeting Feb. 1 at Sternberg Museum of Natural History.
Those honored for their service were Doris Westhusin, Victoria Grade School, 13 years; Doris Robben, Victoria Grade School, eight years; Cora Lou Ryan, Hays Area Children's Center, seven years; Rose Patrick, Hays Area Children's Center, one year; Karen Noon, Holy Family Elementary School, five years; Gloria Wagner, Roosevelt Elementary School, six years; and Erma Chlumsky, Little Sprouts Preschool, three years.
Foster Grandparents can be 55 years of age and older. They must be willing to commit to at least 15 hours of service each week helping children. They serve as tutors and mentors. Their commitment of time entitles them to benefits, including a tax-free stipend of $2.65/hour to enable them to serve without cost to themselves. Other benefits are a travel allowance, accident and liability insurance, training, a uniform and recognition.
The Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by Fort Hays State University and provides service opportunities for older adults in western Kansas.
