LUCAS -- A May 18 class on using the Maori windmill knot will be conducted at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas.

The Maori knot hails form New Zealand, using strips of uniform width -- in the case of the class, discarded plastic bundling strap from the post office -- to make mats, baskets and totes. At the class, participants will make a small mat to master the technique and then explore how to shape three-dimensional figures as well as what other materials can be used.

At the May 18 class, materials will be provided.

As June approaches, along with ripening, there's a chance to learn wheatweaving from Doris Johnson. Four Wednesday evening sessions are planned beginning June 5. The session will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Those sessions will teach how and when to harvest straw, prepare it for plaiting and will finish at least one project each session. It's open to beginners as well as more experienced plaiters.

Call the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas at (785) 525-6118 for more information and to reserve a place as class size is limited. Both workshops are considered good opportunities for 4-H members who are enrolled in crafts.
