Russell doctor prepares to celebrate 50 years of service to community
Special to The Hays Daily News
Fifty years ago, a quiet unassuming physician began his practice of medicine, never dreaming the wind-swept community would become his home.
Earl D. Merkel came to Russell in 1958 fresh out of medical school. He came, he said, primarily because physician Wendlel McAllaster contacted him, telling Merkel there was opportunity here -- an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of his patients.
"The community has given me more satisfaction in the practice of medicine than I ever expected," Merkel said.
The people of the Russell community were helpful and friendly, he added.
The stable environment was a draw for the physician who attended Fort Hays State University.
Merkel received his bachelor of arts degree from Fort Hays State University and his doctorate of medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his internship in 1958 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita.
Merkel has worked in family medicine and at Russell Regional Hospital. Merkel is hosting a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Russell Elks Lodge to thank the community for its support though the years. This is not a retirement party, but a thank you to the community for the years of support, Merkel said.
