Military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application.

The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after Oct. 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs.

At 1 p.m. Nov. 4, Social Security will present a national webinar, "Social Security for Wounded Warriors." During this webinar, you will learn more about our benefit programs and the expedited processing of disability claims available to our nation's Wounded Warriors.

We welcome service members, their families and friends, and those that advocate for them to participate in this Web-based seminar as we discuss questions such as:

* "Who is eligible for benefits?

* When should a person apply?

* How does someone apply?

The webinar will be hosted through Social Security's Web site, www.socialsecurity.gov.

For more information, go to www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors/webinar1.htm.

You will then have the opportunity to submit questions before the webinar.

Questions for this column should be mailed to "Social Security Matters" Attn: James Feyerherm, 1212 E. 27th, Hays, KS 67601. All names will be held confidential. Other questions should be directed to (800) 772-1213 or call or visit your local Social Security office. You can also access SSA online at www.socialsecurity.gov.
