'Hellboy' even better with sequel

Printer-friendly version

Title: "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" (PG-13)

Feature classification: action/sci-fi.

The cast: Ron Pearlman.

Film synopsis: The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.

Positive aspects: The character and creature make-up show extensive and intricate detail that instantly catch your sight by sporting a highly creative appearance, while most of the visual effects support top quality craftsmanship, with the combined ingredients unveiling a fascinating view. The cast assembly is more than satisfactory as the actors portray their roles with total conviction. All of the action scenes present plenty of energy and impact the audience with a powerful punch. The storyline forms a fine shape, maintaining your interest as the script itself upholds a well written flavor. "Hellboy II" certainly delivers a suitable sequel, with Big Red proving that he's better the second time around.

Negative areas: None.

Reel rating: 5

Title: "Meet Dave" (PG).

Feature classification: comedy.

The cast: Eddie Murphy.

Film synopsis: A crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman

Positive aspects: Several comical moments surround the film as a variety of zany characters capture your interest and induce widespread laughter. Murphy is especially entertaining, with his comedic skills showing up in plain sight. Simply by using an assortment of goofy facial expressions and bumbling body gestures, Murphy commandeers the screen with his outrageous sense of humor.

Negative areas: The concept for the movie certainly draws attention. Unfortunately, the script delivers a supply of errors that brings about a negative response on the finished film. For example, some of the "romantic moments" are a bit too thick, while other injections come across as rather lame. Still, the crazy antics of Murphy provide plenty of amusement, proving Dave might be strange, but he's fun to hang out with.

Reel rating: 2.5.
