Sales tax-funded projects would cost up to $14.5M
The Ellis County Commission gave the authority in January to issue bonds not to exceed $14.5 million for construction of an EMS/rural fire building, expansion and renovation to the county jail, law enforcement center and courthouse, as well as renovations to administrative buildings at 718 Main and 601 Main.
A county-wide 0.5-percent sales tax to pay for the projects would be subject to voter consideration in a special election either this spring or summer.
The projects at 718 Main and 601 Main likely won't be part of the sales tax question, but would remain as part of the bond issue and paid for in the county's budget.
Ellis County Administrator Greg Sund said the project will likely come in lower than $14.5 million. He gave $11.5 million to $12 million as a more likely estimate.
The commission issued the authority acting as a self-appointed Public Building Commission.
