Dighton teen killed in crash at Walker
WALKER -- A Dighton teen died Friday night when the vehicle she was traveling in swerved to avoid hitting a deer on Interstate 70, at the east end of the Walker Bridge in Ellis County.
Hope James, 16, was killed and four others were injured in the one-vehicle accident, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
According to the Patrol, Christopher M. Johnson, 28, Dighton, was driving a 2004 GMC Yukon traveling east on I-70 at about 10:35 p.m. when he swerved to avoid a deer. He still hit the deer and drove off the shoulder, over corrected, and then the vehicle rolled and landed on its top hitting a fence.
Johnson, and three other passengers Rebecca Harmison, 15, Garden City, Wyatt Marsteller, 17, Dighton, and Ieasha D. Gray, 15, Dighton, all were transported to Hays Medical Center for injuries. James died from her injuries. The driver and all the passengers were wearing their seat belts, according to the patrol.
