Hays woman chosen as Daughter of the Year
At a recent Daughters of Isabella meeting of Isabella Circle No. 254, Wanda Oborny was chosen as 2013 Daughter of the Year. She will be honored at the Isabella annual breakfast Sunday following 8 a.m. Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Oborny is an active IHM parishoner and active in the Daughters of Isabella for eight years. She has served the Circle as Scribe, Monitor and is an Inner Guard. She is in charge of refreshments and crafts at the Circle's sponsored bingo games. She participates in recitation of the rosary when a member dies, as well as being available to serve as honorary pallbearer.
On the fourth Sunday of the month, she is available to assist in reciting the rosary prior to Mass when D of I members are in charge. IHM stewardship functions include assisting with decorating the church at season's changes; in charge of serving coffee and doughnuts on the second Sunday of the month following Masses; folding church bulletins; and advertising manager for IHM Fall Feast and soup supper. She bakes pies, cakes for funeral dinners and is a "professional baker" with cakes and cupcakes for family and friends. Previously, she has assisted in teaching religion to elementary school children.
Oborny is a weekly volunteer at the Hays Medical Center gift shop, as well as volunteering in the Outpatient Radiation/Oncology Department. Additionally, she volunteers at the information desk and is a Hospice volunteer. She serves as treasurer of Via Christi Auxiliary and a member-at-large of the Volunteer Board at HaysMed.
Veterans' pins will be awarded to those members celebrating 50 years and 25 years in the local circle. Also, plans are under way for the 90th anniversary celebration of Isabella Circle, scheduled for June 29.
Oborny is the mother of three children, including a stepson; three grandchildren; and a step-grandson. She resides in Hays with her husband, Paul.
