Crash that closed school leads to arrest

The driver of a vehicle that hit a gas meter last week has been arrested for possession of a hallucinogenic drug and drug paraphernalia.

Kara McLaughlin, 26, Hays, was arrested Sunday. At 10:28 p.m. March 5, the vehicle she was driving struck a gas meter near Roosevelt Elementary School, 2000 MacArthur. Gas was shut off to the school, forcing its closure the next day.

There were no leaks, Midwest Energy said. The meter was repaired, adn Roosevelt reopened the following day.

In the vehicle with McLaughlin were three juvenile passengers. No injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for the Hays Police Department said the vehicle was towed. Upon inspection of the vehicle, a marijuana pipe was found, the spokesperson said.
