Tiger softball falls in regular season finale
KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team dropped its regular season finale, 8-2, Sunday against the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was called off due to weather.
The Tigers finished the regular season 28-18 overall and 17-9 in the MIAA.
Paxton Duran (16-8) threw 3.1 innings in the start. She gave up five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jordan Jones pitched the remainder, and gave up three more runs on six hits.
FHSU's two runs came in the third inning as the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Danie Brinkmann, and an RBI single to right by Kylie Strand.
Kearney (13-28) scored two runs in the home half of the inning on a two-run double, then took the lead for good in the fourth. The Lopers had eight runs on 12 hits to the Tigers' six hits.
Strand was 2 for 3, and Bianca Adame finished 2 for 4. FHSU is the No. 4 seed for this week's MIAA postseason tournament in Overland Park. The Tigers will play fifth-seeded Missouri Western State University at 6 p.m. Thursday at Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
