Tiger baseball takes 3 of 4 from Northwest

The Fort Hays State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State University on Sunday.

The Tigers swept a doubleheader on Saturday in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series, which was played at Larks Park, but was scheduled to be played in Maryville, Mo.. It was moved to Hays because of field conditions at Northwest Missouri State.

After winning 4-3 and 13-10 on Saturday, the Tigers lost Sunday's first game, 14-3, before winning the series finale, 9-2.

In Sunday's Game 2, senior Matt Augustine pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits, to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Sophomore Nash Smith and junior Chase Schippers each homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers, and junior Kyle Stacken hit a solo shot.

In Sunday's opener, Northwest Missouri State (3-16 overall, 1-6 MIAA) used a pair of six-run innings to take a 13-2 lead after four innings over Fort Hays (12-4, 8-4).

Freshman starter Chase Newman (1-2) allowed six runs in two-plus innings for Fort Hays. Smith homered for the Tigers.
