FHSU softball 3-1 in weekend

The Fort Hays State University softball team went 3-1 on a four-game, two-day road trip and remained in fourth place in the MIAA after a swing through Missouri Southern State University and Pittsburg State University. The Tigers defeated Missouri Southern 9-5 in eight innings and 5-1, and then split with the Gorillas on Saturday. FHSU won the first contest 6-5 in nine innings and lost the second contest, 11-3, in five innings. FHSU stands at 26-17, 15-9 MIAA and is off all next week with four regular season games left, all versus University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Missouri Western is in third place in the league at 14-8, while FHSU is 15-9 and University of Central Missouri is 13-9. Fort Hays doesn’t hold the tiebreaker against Missouri Western, but does versus Central Missouri.
In the first game against the Lions on Friday, Paxton Duran worked all eight innings and the Tigers scored four runs in the eighth inning for the win. Danie Brinkmann drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, while Amanda Vaupel finished 3 of 4 with a triple and a run scored. Callie Wright hit a homer, her first since 2012, to break the 5-5 tie. An error and bunt single followed before Brinkmann homered again.
In Game 2, Kelsey Kimminau pitched a complete game and allowed one run on seven hits with a career-high seven strikeouts. Kimminau retired 13 batters at one point. Kylie Strand and Danie Brinkmann combined to go 3 of 6 with a home run a piece.
On Saturday, FHSU won the first game when Wright hit a game-winning homer in the ninth inning. Paxton Duran (16-7) worked all nine innings with five runs allowed on eight hits. Vaupel finished 2 of 4 with a RBI double. Fort Hays came back from a 3-0 deficit and didn’t lead until Wright’s homer.
In Game 2, Kimminau (9-7) took the loss when she pitched two innings and allowed six runs (five earned).
