Tiger softball sweeps MIAA weekly awards

The Fort Hays State University softball team swept the MIAA Athlete of the Week honors, announced Tuesday.
Tiger freshman Tori Beltz was named the conference’s top hitter for the week, and senior ace Maddie Holub was named the Pitcher of the Week for the seventh time this season.
The Tigers went 3-1 in their weekend trip to Missouri, sweeping Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University in a pair of shutouts, and then splitting with University of Central Missouri.
The Tigers set a new school record for wins when they took Game 1 against SW Baptist, and since extended it to 38.
Beltz hit .727 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for the week. She had a slugging percent of 1.182, and reached base in her first 11 plate appearances with eight consecutive hits from the first game to the third game of the weekend.
The Rose Hill native is batting .318 for the Tigers with eight doubles, four homers and seven runs scored. Her .470 slugging percentage is fourth on the team.
Holub was one batter away from her third perfect game of the season in a 7-0 shutout to start the weekend against Southwest Baptist. Holub hit a batter that led to the Bearcats’ only baserunner.
Then against UCM in the next doubleheader, Holub threw another shutout, this time allowing just one hit. It was Holub’s sixth straight start in which she had not allowed an earned run.
The senior, a Thomas More Prep-Marian graduate, has earned the Pitcher of the Week honors six times previous and was also named the Hitter of the Week earlier in the season when she earned both honors.
Holub is 22-1 with a 0.65 earned-run average in 162.1 innings pitched. She has allowed just 15 earned runs (17 total) with 268 strikeouts to 37 walks.
The Tigers, ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the most recent Central Region rankings, are scheduled to play today at University of Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday, and then close the regular season at home Friday against Lincoln (Mo.) University at Tiger Stadium.
