Tiger softball splits Friday

The Fort Hays State University softball team split a pair of impromptu games Friday at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers, who had a weekend tournament called off due to weather this week, scheduled and split with University of Illinois-Springfield on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
FHSU won the opener 4-1, then fell 1-0 in Game 2 to move to 10-5 for the season.
In Game 1, Kelsey Kimminau took a shutout into the seventh inning for the Tigers to pick up the win and move to 4-1. Kimminau gave up just one earned run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Tigers did all their scoring in the sixth. Tori Beltz and Courtney Dobson each drove in a run on bunt singles, then Amanda Vaupel launched a double left center to drive in tow more in the inning. Illinois-Springfield (5-3) got its lone run on a solo home run in the seventh.
No one collected more than one hit for the Tigers.
In Game 2, the difference was an RBI double to left-center field for Springfield.
Paxton Duran pitched four innings, but gave up the one earned run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Kaylyn Kern finished the game and surrendered two more hits with two walks and a strikeout.
FHSU managed 10 hits but stranded nine on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth on a Dobson strikeout.
FHSU is now at home for five straight doubleheaders, a stretch that begins with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. FHSU hosts University of Central Missouri March 7 and Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University on March 8.
