Frances Nelson Regenfuss
Frances Nelson Regenfuss, 97, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, in Richland, Wash.
She was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Hiawatha to Ray and Ruby Nelson. She was a high school graduate in Baldwin City and a 1937 graduate of Baker University with a bachelor's degree.
She married James Willard Regenfuss on April 1, 1950. He preceded her in death in 2007. She began her teaching career in Wathena in 1939. In 1941, she supported the war effort first by working for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, Calif., and in 1943 joined the Marine Corps with the rank of first lieutenant and later captain in the Reserves. She was stationed at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C. After the war, she came to California and attended the University of Redlands, earning a master's degree in 1948. She then moved to Visalia, Calif., to resume her teaching career. In 1956, she resumed her teaching career, teaching history and government at Fleming Junior High School in Lomita for 20 years. After spending 23 of her retirement years in Torrance, she moved to Kennewick in 1999 to be near the rest of her family. She later resided at Canyon Lakes Manor and finally at Quail Hollow in Richland.
Survivors include a son, Larry Regenfuss and wife, Glenda; a granddaughter, Christy Brooks and husband, Josh; a grandson, David Regenfuss and wife, Andie; a great-grandson; Landen Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Desert Lawn Memorial Park, with military honors. This will be open to the public.
