SALINA -- The Hays High School boys' golf team took second place in the 14-team field at the Salina South Invitational on Friday, held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The Indians finished with a four-player team score of 315, while Maize High School took first with 299. Derby was third with 324.
Senior Kaden Beilman led Hays High with his 6-over par 76 to tie for fourth place. Also medaling (top 10) was Indian junior Nathan Romme, who took seventh place with a 77. Rounding out the team scoring was sophomore Payton Ruder's 79, a stroke away from medaling, while seniors Lane Clark, Chase Lynd and junior Cash Hobson each shot 83 to tie for 20th.
Leading the field was Maize's Kale Reynolds, who broke a state record by shooting a 7-under 63. He broke the previous mark of 64 held by Sterling's Michael Gelleman from 2011 (third on the list is Hays High's Nick VonLintel, who shot 65, also in 2011). Reynolds' 63 was 11 strokes ahead of second place on Friday, a 74 shot by Sacred Heart's Brooks Brown. Derby's Jeremy Dunham was third with a 75.
