GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School softball team suffered its first two conference losses of the season Friday when it was swept at Great Bend High School, 4-1 and 14-3. The games were originally scheduled for April 29 but were pushed back due to weather.
In Game 1, Great Bend scored its first run in the second inning and the other three in the third inning to lead 4-0 going into the fourth. Hays High's lone run came in the top of the fourth inning, an RBI from junior Hannah Hearld to score senior Haley Wells.
Hearld took only her second loss in the circle this season, pitching all six innings. She gave up 10 hits and four runs, all earned, to go with six strikeouts. Great Bend outhit Hays High, 10-6.
Despite outhitting Great Bend 9-8 in Game 2, five fielding errors by the Indians crippled them in the 14-3 loss. The Panthers scored three runs each in the first and second innings and led 7-1 after three. Hays High got as close as 7-3 midway through the fifth before Great Bend would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth to earn the run-rule victory.
Hearld accounted for two of the Indians' RBIs, the other coming from sophomore Albany Schaffer. Sophomore Nicole Dinkel had two of the runs, going 3-for-3 at the plate. The other run came from Wells, who was 2-for-4.
The loss went to sophomore Madison Prough, who gave up four hits and eight runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings.
The Indians, now 11-3, will next host Liberal in a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Bickle/Schmidt Sports Complex. First pitch is 1 p.m.
