HHS softball sweeps Central, fifth seed for regional

SALINA -- The Hays High School softball team finished the regular season with a doubleheader sweep Friday of Salina Central.
The Indians won, 7-4, and 12-1 (5 innings) to move to 12-8 for the year.
Hays HIgh will be the No. 5 seed for this week's Class 5A regional, hosted by Goddard-Eisenhower. The Indians will face No. 4 seed Maize South (13-5) in Tuesday's 4 p.m. first-round game in Goddard, and if they win, will face Eisenhower (17-3) in the 5:30 p.m. regional championship game. The winner of the tournament advancecs to the 5A state tournament.
In Game 1 Friday, freshman Madison Prough gave up four runs (two earned) in the complete-game victory. She walked four with one strikeout. Hays High had two errors.
Senior Shea Briggs, in the Indians' leadoff spot, finished 5 for 5 with two runs scored and two driven in. She also had a double. Hays High broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the sixth inning. Senior Katelyn Schumacher also drove in two runs with no hits. She reached on a Salina Central error in the third to drive in a run, and had a sacrifice fly in the the five-run sixth.
In the nightcap, sophomore Kaylie Schoendaller had a big game with a pair of two-RBI home runs. Schoendaller homered in the three-run first inning, and in the five-run third inning for Hays High. The Indians scored two more runs in the fourth and fifth to set the run-rule.
Sophomore Jenna Luebbers (5-2) picked up the win. She gave up four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts.
Schumacher had four hits in Game 2 with three runs scored, and one RBI. Briggs collected three more hits and scored twice.
