HHS softball splits season opener

GOODLAND -- The Hays High School softball team is 1-1 after splitting its season-opening doubleheader on Friday at Goodland.
Goodland won 8-6 in the opener, and then Hays High won the nightcap, 14-10 after a 9-0 lead through two innings.
In the opener, Hays High's Madison Prough took the loss as she pitched all six innings. She allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits with four walks and two strikeouts. In the nigtchap, Prough got the win in 4.2 innings. She gave up just one earned run (seven total) on one hit and three walks. Hays Hgh committed four errors.
Offensively, Courtney Storer went 2-for-4 in the opener, driving in a run and Kaylie Schoendaler drove in three runs with a home run.
In the nightcap Katelyn Schumacher, Haley Wells and Storer all had doubles, as Wells and Schumacher each drove in three runs. Hays High had a 11-1 lead after three innings, but gave up seven runs in the fifth. Hays High ended with 14 runs on 15 hits and the four errors.
Shea Briggs was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with three runs scored and one driven in.
Hays High is off until traveling to Pratt on March 28 for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
