HHS girls open season with win
By The Hays Daily News
Led by its top two singles players, the Hays High School girls' tennis team opened its season by winning the Cimarron Invitational on Thursday.
Senior Julie Balzer, the Indians' No. 2 singles player, cruised past all four of her opponents, defeating Cimarron's Katie McDowell 6-1 in the finals. Sophomore Brooke Forinash, the No. 1 singles player entering the tournament, rolled into the finals of her flight before falling to Tribune-Greeley County's Bailey Harris, 6-0.
Both doubles teams took third in their respective flights. Seniors Molly Barnett and Kelsee DeBoer lost in their second match before winning the final two. Juniors Emily McPherson and Ashley Cossaart opened with a loss, then turned around to win the next two matches before losing their final match.
Tribune took second behind Hays High as a team, with Ulysses, Cimarron and St. John rounding out the field.
The Indians' next action is Sept. 5 in the HHS Invitational at the HHS and City Courts.
