Hays High wrestling third at Seaman tourney

TOPEKA -- In its first trip to the tournament, the Hays High School wrestling team finished third Saturday in the Topeka Seaman Invitational.

Hays High went 3-2 in duals for the tournament, finishing third behind host Seaman and Blue Valley Southwest.

Hays High defeated Kansas City-Turner, 55-15, in its first dual, then beat Shawnee Mission East, 48-21. With a 39-27 win against Royal Valley, Hays High was 3-0 in the first three rounds, before suffering back-to-back losses to Seaman, 49-27, and BV Southwest, 42-25.

Preston Weigel and Ethan Deterding were 5-0 for the Indians at 195 and 182 pounds, respectively.

Hays High had a trio of wrestlers with just one loss. Kyler Meyers finished 4-1 at 170 pounds, Vincent Scott went 4-1 at 285 and Jake Sedbrook was 4-1 at 145 pounds.

The Indians next compete Tuesday in a dual on the road against Dodge City. Match time is 6 p.m.
