Local teens attend Girls State

Sadie Hawpe of Russell High School has been chosen by William Roe Post No. 99 of Russell to attend the 71st annual session of Sunflower Girls State on the Washburn University campus in Topeka. She is the daughter of Jeffrey D. Hawpe and Christina Durbin.
Alexa Brull, Catharine, was chosedn by American Legion Unit No. 173. She is the daughter of Keith and Melinda Brull.
Sunflower Girls State was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. It took place June 2 through Friday.
She joined approximately 325 other young women who have just completed their junior year of high school.
Hawpe learned about the political system involved in the government of Kansas. Beginning at the city level, advancing to county and the state, the girls registered to vote, filed nomination papers, conducted political campaigns, and prepared and presented speeches.
During the week, speakers on government at the various levels shared their expertise with the girls. Speakers included Gov. Sam Brownback, Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Cheri Thomas, department president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and other state, county and city officials.
