Alvina L. (Gerber) Honas
Alvina L. (Gerber) Honas passed away on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at the age of 90. Alvina was born on October 19, 1922, to Henry and Walburga (Weigel) Gerber and was raised on the family farm just south of Ellis, KS, along with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
On December 29, 1941, Alvina married Ernest F. Honas at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis. They moved to Hays, KS, in 1972 to be closer to their children and grandchildren before Ernie died in 1975. Alvina worked several years in the cafeteria at Ellis High School and Washington Grade School in Ellis, then later in housekeeping at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays. She retired and moved into the Epworth Towers in Hays. In 1999, she moved to Indiana to live with her daughter Kay.
She was a volunteer at a food pantry in Indianapolis, spent many hours making blankets and slippers for others, attended little league games of her great-grandsons, and took several trips back to KS to visit her son, Ernie Jr.
Alvina is survived by her 2 children: Ernie Honas Jr. and wife, Rhonda, Junction City, KS, and Kay Williams, Terre Haute, IN. 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren: Scott and wife Kricket Williams with 3 sons Samuel, Joseph, Lucas of Zionsville, IN; Jeff and wife Mikki Williams with 1 son Tyler of Terre Haute, IN; Christy (Honas) Massell and husband Shane with 1 son Benjamin of Wichita, KS; Cory and wife Natalie Honas with 3 children Ross, Audrey, Colin of Gardner, KS; and Carrie (Honas) Robaina and husband Ricardo with 3 children Ethan, Mateo, Mae of Waconia, MN.
(Rhonda Honas family) 4 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren: Ryan and wife Nicole Tyrell with 2 children Abby, Ryleigh of Littleton, CO; Justina Tyrell of Plano, TX; Alisha (Tyrell) Richards and husband Ross with 2 children Reagan, Reese of Avon Park, FL; John and wife Melissa Krayca with 2 children Gabriel, Jackson of Gardner, KS; (Jeff Williams family) 2 step-great-grandsons and 2 step-great-great-grandsons: Nik Conwell of Terre Haute, IN; Devin Conwell with 2 sons Kayden, Taven of Terre Haute, IN. Also including friends: the Conwell, the Wehr and the Schneider families all of Indiana; also several in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie Sr.; her parents; all of her brothers and sisters, Theodore, Killian, Gilbert, William, Margaret Holton and Agnes Pfannenstiel. Alvina was the final member of the Henry Gerber family of Ellis to pass away.
Alvina was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church of Terre Haute, IN, where a rosary was said by Father Rick, Ernie and Kay then spoke of their mother, which was followed by a mass on 2-16-2013. After the Mass, a dinner was provided by Donna and Don Schneider. Memorial services are pending in Hays, KS, for late May where her cremains will be buried next to her husband.
