Alleged cop impersonator hits western Kansas
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Kansas law enforcement is asking for assistance in locating Robert Helms.
Helms is suspected of passing himself off as a law enforcement officer, including using a false badge, while cashing phony payroll checks and issuing bad checks to purchase items.
The KBI said Helms recently has been in western Kansas, including Friday in Scott City and Russell. Helms has targeted Alco and similar stores in smaller communities.
Helms, 45, is 5 feet, 7 inches, 190 pounds and has blue eyes. He has short gray hair, is known to wear round glasses and the KBI said he appears older than his age. He has been seen driving a maroon, possibly Chrysler or Dodge, minivan. As always, the suspect is presumed innocent of all charges.
Anyone who has any knowledge of Helms' whereabouts is asked to call their local law enforcement agency. Anyone with information about Helms or his location is asked to call (800) KS-CRIME or 911.
