Larks claim win in league opener
By The Hays Daily News
DODGE CITY -- The Hays Larks pushed a run across in the top of the ninth inning on a fielder's choice RBI, and picked up a 2-1 Jayhawk League victory Wednesday night against the Dodge City A's.
The win moves Hays to 4-0, and 1-0 in JL play heading into this weekend's first league series, a 3-game set at the El Dorado Broncos. Games are slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Nick Goza (2-0) picked up the win in one inning of relief of starter D.J. Carr, who pitched seven innings. Ethan Landon picked up the Larks' first save of the summer.
The teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning. Hays struck first on an RBI single by Michael Burns that scored Cooper Langley, who led off the inning with a double.
Dodge City (1-1, 0-1) answered in the bottom half, scoring on the Larks' lone error.
Through the next two innings, Hays left five runners stranded, then left one on in the eighth.
In the ninth, Burns recorded a bunt single to lead off the inning, then was moved to second on a sacrifice by Nate Olinger. Ty Lefler singled, then Evan Gruener reached first on a fielder's choice while Burns scored from third for the go-ahead.
Landon, from Kansas State University, retired two batters before giving up back-to-back singles in the ninth, but got a ground out to himself to end the threat.
In seven innings, Carr gave up three hits and the one unearned run with three walks and no strikeouts.
The Broncos won 22-8 against Derby in their league opener, and are now 4-0. Right-hander Jake Fromson, the freshman from Kansas State, is slated to start Friday's game. Goza is due up Saturday, and right-hander Alex Daniele, a freshman from New Jersey Institute of Technology, is slated for Sunday's series finale.
