Liberal takes two from Larks

LIBERAL -- After battling through a stalemate for seven innings Sunday night, the Liberal Bee Jays broke through in the eighth with three runs and claimed a 3-0 victory over the Hays Larks to sweep the series.

The two teams are back at it again Tuesday and Wednesday at Larks Park.

Nick Goza pitched seven scoreless innings for Hays before Liberal got an RBI double in the eighth to break the scoreless tie.

Goza (4-3) took the loss in 7.1 innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts to just one walk. D.J. Carr gave up an unearned run, but recorded the final two outs of the eighth.

Hays (16-11 overall, 12-11 league) managed eight hits, but left nine runners stranded. Ty Leffler had three hits for Hays, and Derrick Mount had two. Liberal improved to 16-13 overall and 10-13 in league play.

Hays is at home for four straight games this week, with back-to-back games against Liberal, then a game Friday and Saturday against Fort Collins, Colo., in non-league action.

On Saturday night, the Larks rallied with three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, only to fall 6-4 to the Bee Jays. Jake Fromson took the loss in 5.1 innings.
