Larks take one of two
By The Hays Daily News
WELLINGTON -- The Hays Larks took one of two in a doubleheader with the Jayhawk League-leading Wellington Heat on Tuesday night.
Playing a doubleheader from a rainout the previous night, the Larks dropped the opener, 3-2, then shut out the Heat, 5-0, to snap an eight-game losing skid to Wellington that dates back to last season.
The split pushes Hays to 21-13 overall and 15-13 in the Jayhawk League. Hays is a half-game back of Derby, with the Twins in Hays this weekend in a series that likely will determine the second-place spot behind Wellington. The teams will finish a suspended game from earlier this season beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Larks Park, then play their regularly scheduled first game of a three-game series.
In Tuesday's Game 1, Wellington (32-6, 23-4) had a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a Larks error. Hays answered in the second with a sacrifice fly by Evan Gruener. The Heat, though, put the game out of reach with a solo home run in the fourth.
Nick Goza (4-4) took the loss. He gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Ty Detmer homered in the seventh with two outs to score the other Hays run.
In the nightcap, Blake Roley (2-0) contained Wellington to just one hit in five innings. Meanwhile, Hays took a 2-0 lead after one and led 4-0 after four. Michael Burns finished 3 for 3, scored a run, and drove in two. Derrick Mount drove in a pair of runs, and Matt Leuty drove in the other.
