Larks pick up win No. 17
By NICK McQUEEN
Jeff Chesnut had his deepest start of the season. He threw seven innings, struck out three with one walk and scattered six hits in the win, as Hays defeated Dodge City 7-1 on Tuesday at Larks Park.
The win moves Hays to 17-3 overall and 13-3 atop the league standings. Dodge City fell to 9-12, 4-10 in the league.
Chesnut (2-1) extended his longest start by 1.1 innings in his fifth start of the summer. He allowed Dodge City's lone run in the sixth inning after giving up a double and back-to-back singles, but earned his third strikeout to end the threat. He came back in the seventh and earned a 1-2-3 inning. Dalton Viner and David Owen each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Owen struck out two in the ninth.
Jake Placzek broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning after Desmond Roberts had a two-out single. Placzek then singled in the go-ahead run.
In the fifth, the Larks scored three runs on two walks and a Dodge City error and a two-RBI double for Brett Lang, who had two hits on the night.
Hays is at home for six more consecutive games, starting with back-to-back nights Wednesday and Thursday in non-league action against the Boulder Collegians.
