Bully pulpit

Several years ago, Al Gore released a documentary titled "An Inconvenient Truth." Since then, people the world over have debated whether the climactic changes to our planet are the direct result of mankind's use of fossil fuels and the subsequent release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere -- or if the changes we are witnessing are simply nothing more than naturally occurring changes that take place on a regular basis.

Most, but certainly not all, of the supporters of global warming tend to be politically liberal and speak out against the influence of industrialized nations such as the United States. Anyone who brings up an argument that opposes this viewpoint is quickly made out to be hostile to our planet and must therefore be discredited.

Case in point, Bob Hooper's latest rant in last Friday's HDN, where Hooper attempts to discredit conservative columnist Walter Williams and his view on the global warming debate. Hooper writes that Williams has ties to the Koch family of Wichita, which has, over the years, donated (according to Hooper) $14.4 million over the past 14 years to George Washington University -- where Williams works as a professor of economics. Hooper goes on to say that as an economist, Williams does not have the scientific qualifications to offer any opposing viewpoints on global warming.

Well, Mr. Bob Hooper, what degree of science do you hold that qualifies you to offer an opinion on this matter? What hands-on research have you done to support the theory that humankind alone is directly responsible for changing the climate on this planet? Let me guess; the answer is none. You have read and researched material that supports Al Gore's claims (who refuses to debate anyone on this issue) and like those who carry a biased opinion, you quickly work to discredit and demean anyone who disagrees with you.

Proof of this is found in past articles where you've referred to former President Bush and Vice-President Cheney as "Pinochio Flight Jacket" and "28-gauge Dick," respectfully.

Upon reading your past articles and seeing the way you slam anyone who supports a conservative point of view, it's clear that the only goal you have in your rants is to talk badly about and call names to those with whom you disagree. The true nature of any debate is the respectful exchange of ideals. Your rants make you out to be nothing more than the classic schoolyard bully. How pathetically immature.
