Hutchinson police took a man into custody Sunday evening following a high speed chase through parts of town.

"At about 4:40 p.m. a trooper with the Kansas Highway patrol observed a man he knew had warrants for his arrest driving in the area of 900 block of West Fourth Avenue. The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and officers with the Hutchinson Police Department assisted the trooper," said Lt. Thad Pickard, of the Hutchinson Police Department.

The man fleeing from police abandoned a gold four-door Ford sedan in an alley just off 10th Avenue and Poplar Street. He then ran into a home at the corner of 11th Avenue and Poplar Street. Officers set up a perimeter and were able to negotiate with the occupants of the residence to exit the house. Several people exited the house and were detained. One of the occupants, the driver of the vehicle, Dominique Vargas, 35, was placed under arrest according to Pickard.

A crowd of people gathered to watch as several police cars, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, Reno County Sheriff's Department and South Hutchinson Police assisted the local police.

Jeffrey Payne was in the home talking to his girlfriend at the time and said he didn't know the man who entered the home.

"He was out of breath, threw up, and then ran upstairs," Payne said. "The police came and told us to come out with our hands up."

Payne and two other men were handcuffed and questioned in the backyard. Payne and the other man were released, but Vargas was taken away by the police. He was the man Payne said ran into the house.

Vargas was arrested on suspicion of felony flee and elude, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to give information at a motor vehicle accident, and driving while suspended.

A resident at Commerce Gardens reported seeing the same vehicle pursued by police just before 5 p.m.

The gold sedan reportedly flew through the apartment complex driveway near The Hutchinson Mall with several patrol vehicles in pursuit.

"I started yelling for them to slow down," said Nickie Floyd. "He just about wiped out a little kid."
