The Hays Monarchs AA Legion baseball team begins play in the Zone 6 Tournament today in Lincoln.

The Monarchs (14-12) will play host Lincoln County (17-5) in the noon game, then depending on a win or loss would face either Smith Center (13-7) or Hoisington (11-10).

The tournament runs today through Wednesday (if necessary) with the first title round played Monday at 8:30 p.m.

The Monarchs won last year's zone tourney, then placed second in the state tournament.

Hays enters the tournament 14-12 after splitting its regular season finale against Great Bend on Wednesday.

Pierce Schippers is the Monarchs' top hitter with a .409 average. He is one of six Monarchs at .300 or better, including Cameron Brin, who leads the team in total hits. He is tied for the team lead with Ryan Schippers in doubles at seven. Brin (5-1) will start today's first game, then Shane Zimmerman (1-3) will get the nod in the second. If the Monarchs play Monday, Pierce Schippers (3-4) will take the mound.

The winner of the zone advances to next week's state tournament in Pratt.
