Top two administrators at Hays schools out this fall In an email to staff Tuesday, Hays USD 489 Superintendent Will Roth announced he will retire as of Oct. 1. It also was announced Tuesday that Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain also will retire, effective Sept. 1.

Roth, who has spent 28 years with the district in various administrative capacities, previously announced last month he would retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

The move follows a 90-minute executive session Monday that included a discussion of non-elected personnel, although no action was taken in open session. Roth's letter said the "board requested an earlier retirement date."

"The board and I are working together to develop a plan to make a transition to the new leadership team," Roth wrote. "I feel like I have had a great family to go to work with the last 28 years and I know USD 489 will continue to prosper. There will be changes going forward and although change is hard, we all know that it is necessary if we want our students to have an opportunity to excel in the world."

Cain's retirement and the date change for Roth are among the personnel transactions the board of education will take action on at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Toepfer Board Room at the Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.
