SALINA, Kan. (AP) -- A former captain with the Columbia, Mo., police department has been named chief of police in Salina.
The Salina Journal reports (http://bit.ly/17E2Boq ) Brad L. Nelson replaces Jim Hill, who retired Oct. 1. Nelson will take over beginning Dec. 2.
Carson Mansfield is serving as interim chief and plans to retire in December.
City Manager Jason Gage says Nelson was selected from a field of 38 applicants from across the country.
He says Nelson was a captain for the past eight of his 21 years in Columbia. Before that, Nelson worked for the Excelsior Springs, Mo., police department. He was also in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Nelson has a bachelor's in criminal justice administration from Central Missouri State University and a master's in public administration from the University of Missouri.
