Planned Parenthood response
Planned Parenthood response
On behalf of all those to whom you referred in an editorial about Planned Parenthood, those who, every cold January, vigilantly have marched from St. Joseph Catholic Church to Planned Parenthood to affirm the value of every human life, I must tell you -- with all due respect -- it is your facts that are skewed.
You stated the Hays PP never has done abortion procedures.
Fact: I know a woman who, at just 15, walked into the Hays Planned Parenthood with her boyfriend's stepmother. As part of her "counseling" at PP, this girl was given precise instructions on how to procure an abortion without her parents' permission. She was instructed to blatantly lie to the judge and say her parents would throw her out of the house when they discovered her pregnancy. She also was told exactly where she could obtain this illegal abortion. (George Tiller, Wichita) Unfortunately, this vulnerable girl, following PP's guidance, had the abortion. Subsequently, she slipped into depressive and erratic behavior. (Common after abortion.) Not until years later, when she was admitted to a hospital for depression, did her bewildered and heartbroken parents learn the truth as to why their beautiful, happy daughter had changed so suddenly, drastically. These parents were left with years of trial, grief, a broken daughter and a dead grandbaby. Their mourning just had begun. Mr. Lowry, if this was my daughter or yours, would we not be outraged? Devastated?
By your own admission, Planned Parenthood copiously dispenses birth control pills and other contraceptives.
Fact: Most are largely uninformed as to the three critical functions of the birth control pill. First, it prevents the woman from ovulating. Secondly, it changes the form of the cervical mucus which slows or blocks the sperms' travel. Lastly, and this is important, the pill changes the composition of the uterine lining, which makes it nearly impossible for a newly-conceived baby to implant in the uterus; therefore, causing a chemical abortion. Consequently, since the pill is not 100-percent effective in preventing conception, some women using the pill have been aborting their own babies without even knowing. Therefore, PP of Hays directly was, and indirectly, an abortion provider.
Your editorial suggests the health of women and men will suffer without PP.
Fact: The services PP provided can be obtained at any doctor's office or First Care Clinic in Hays, and with benefit of a physician. Furthermore, contraceptives now can be obtained at any local grocery or drug store. To my personal disgust and dismay, the morning-after abortion pill also is available at most any pharmacy, to any age, without a prescription, no ID required.
FACT: The pill and other hormonal birth control methods alter and hinder normal functions of a woman's reproductive system; therefore, it has caused many health issues for women, including, but not limited to: increased chance of blood clots, stroke, heart attacks, cervical, liver, and breast cancer -- grave conditions that are not usually discussed in the detail to which they ought. In 2005, the World Health Organization listed the pill as a Group 1 cancer-causing agent. When questioned about the link in breast cancer to oral contraceptives, Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, an oncologist breast surgeon and co-founder of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, said, "This stuff is not new. ... It's in the literature linking hormonal contraceptive use to the 660-percent rise in non-invasive breast cancer since 1973." Six-hundred-sixty percent, Mr. Lowry. That's quite an increase -- an unacceptable, potentially-deadly increase.
FACT: As for the STD testing, in addition to campus and walk-in clinics, kits can be ordered online so individuals can test for STD's in the privacy of the home. Yet, with the more than 800 Planned Parenthood clinics operating for multiple decades in our country, one would think STD's nearly would be non-existent. On the contrary, STD's are on the rise, at what could be considered near-epidemic rates. Thus, the services PP offered, easily acquired birth control and STD testing, simply are not really helping, which is why David Gittrich of Kansans for Life, stated as such.
I believe there are multiple reasons Planned Parenthood of Hays closed. One reason is abortion clinics everywhere are closing due to an upward pro-life trend in this country. Secondly, no matter the intentions of the recent Hays' PP staff, they were part of an organization whose main business is abortion. All PP clinics are feeders for abortion clinics. Undercover investigations throughout the country have exposed widespread corruption in PP clinics. Don't believe me? Look online for the testimonies of ex-PP workers who discovered less affective birth control pills were given out so the women would come back to the clinic pregnant and needing an abortion. Read the former Planned Parenthood manager Abby Johnson's book, "Unplanned," wherein she describes being instructed to "push abortions" at a PP corporate convention. Watch the documentary "Blood Money," which exposes the money-making monster the abortion industry has become and its connection to PP.
Lastly, clinics are closing because people are waking up and objecting to the more than $475 million a year in taxpayer funding given to Planned Parenthood, whose services are morally objected to by many, and whose services can be provided elsewhere with more accountability and less scandalously. For instance, in the period of 2002-2003, there were more than 107 criminal charges filed against clinics in the state of Kansas alone.
If you still are in doubt, Google "Eugenics, Margaret Sanger", and you'll find the feature PBS did on the founder of Planned Parenthood. Sanger's goal was to rid the world of poor black children and those deemed inferior. Does that sound like Hitler? Yes, because they shared a eugenics belief, Whenever we, the society, deem the innocent or weak unworthy of life because they are "inferior, unwanted or unplanned," we are doing much the same. If we are going to be an "enlightened" society, let us truly be enlightened and educated -- our cherished mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, deserve to know the whole truth.
I am the first to admit many well-meaning people can get caught up in deceptions are cleverly are propagated. These deceptions can fool us into believing the evil we are doing is good. No matter how lovely the notion of "Planned Parenthood" sounds, things are definitely not as they seem. As I pondered the great deceptions of Planned Parenthood while writing this response, Jesus' words in Matthew 23:27 came to mind: "You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean."
Mr. Lowry, you have the good fortune to use the newspaper to voice your opinion. Through this commentary, I have the honor of being the voice for those who suffered because of Planned Parenthood's deceptions, and am especially honored to be the voice for those victims who never were given the chance to speak.
