Sibyl Andrea McKinley
Sibyl Andrea McKinley, 96, Mullinville, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Hill Top House, Bucklin.
She was born Oct. 25, 1917, north of Mullinville to John W. and Virga Mae Pridy McKinley. She was a 1936 graduate of Mullinville Rural High School. She attended Fort Hays State Teachers College in 1936, earning a lifetime teacher's certificate. She taught for two years before returning to Fort Hays College, earning a bachelor of science degree.
She lived on the family farm all her life, except for years in college and the Navy, moving to the Kansas Soldier's Home at Fort Dodge in 2004. In 2007, she moved to Hill Top House, Bucklin.
She enlisted in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) in 1943, serving in Bronx, N.Y., San Diego and the Great Lakes. She was honorably discharged as a pharmacist's mate second class in 1945. She was proud of her military service and enjoyed meeting and visiting with other veterans. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from KU. In 1959, she became the first kindergarten teacher at Mullinville and retired in 1982 after 22 years in that position, totaling 29 years teaching.
She was a 50-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Narcissus Chapter at Mullinville, She served as president in many professional organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, Business and Professional Women, American Association of Retired Persons, National Education Association, State Teacher's Association and Southwest Kansas Teacher's Association. She was a member of the Fort Hays Alumni Association and the Alumni Association of the University of Kansas. The Business and Professional Women of Greensburg recognized her as the Women of the Year in 1984.
Survivors include a brother, Myron McKinley and wife, Elaine, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Virginia Slimmer, Plainville; her nephews and spouses, Phil and Arlene Hayse, Tom and LeAnne Hayse, Joel and Patricia Hayse, Rodney and Kathy Dutt, Gregory and Sandi Dutt, Stanley and Bridgette Dutt, John W. McKinley and Bruce and Jennifer Slimmer; her nieces and spouses, Pat and Michael Pfeifer, Jane and Clark Sweet, Jo Bennett, Rebecca and Cosmio Lucchese, Pamela and Ted Bell, Beth and Ron Kershner, Ruth Hayse, Debbie McMahan, Diannah McKinley and Don Carrico, Jackie and Don Langholz and Kathy Slimmer; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Harold and John Jr.; and two sisters, Alice and Carrel.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mullinville United Methodist Church; burial in McKinley Cemetery, north of Mullinville.
Friends can visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg, with refreshments at 7 p.m. at Kiowa County Senior Center. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Kiowa County Senior Citizens Center in care of the funeral home.
