Tigers' McPhail earns national honor

Makayla McPhail, a junior on the Fort Hays State University track and field team, was named the recipient of the NCAA Elite 89 Award in NCAA Division II for outdoor track and field.
According to a release by the FHSU sports information department, McPhail, from Liberal, is the Tigers' first recipient of the award, which recognizes the "true essence of the student-athlete at the national championship level in his or her sprot, while also achieveing the highest academic standard among his or her peers."
The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for the NCAA's 89 championships.
McPhail, who came to FHSU for volleyball, is competing this weekend in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colo. She has the top throw in Division II in the javelin this season at 157 feet, 10 inches. McPhail was the runner-up in Division II last season.
