Victor (Vicki) Justis Sprock
Victor (Vicki) Justis Sprock, 98, Hays, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013.
She was born May 13, 1914, in Van Horn, Texas, to Victor Hugo and Artimisa (Artie Wood) Justis.
She married Vincent E. Sprock on June 16, 1946, in Houston. He preceded her in death March 14, 2001.
Her parents homesteaded in Orange, N.M., in 1915. She has lived in New Mexico, Texas, Prince George, B.C., Montana, Nebraska and Hays. She worked for Taylor County Welfare office, Commercial Credit Co., and Rio Grand National Life Insurance Co.
She graduated from Draughon's Business College. After college, she received a civil service appointment to the Department of Agriculture Marketing News Service. Shortly after her appointment, she transferred to the IRS only to transfer again to Fort Worth, Texas, where she worked for Public Health Hospital. Later, she returned to the IRS.
In August 1953, they began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana. She worked as a school clerk, secretary and teacher.
After their service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the family moved to Chadron, Neb., where she was director of the GED program of Chadron State College.
In July 1999, they moved from Chadron to Hays.
She was active in community service, serving as president of West Ward PTA, in Church Women United, District President of General Federated Women's Club, Northwest Nebraska Community Action Council, and was a volunteer income tax assistant and tax consultant for the elderly. She served on the general board of ABC/USA and the Nebraska Baptist state board and state ordination council. She served many years as an organist, Sunday school teacher and was active in Christian education, with a special love for youth.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Sprock and wife, Nancy, Hays; a daughter, Mary Green and husband, Jerry, Gillette, Wyo.: a daughter-in-law, Liz Sprock, Crawford, Neb.; two sisters, Sue Men, San Antonio, and Melba Warren Taff, Jal, N.M.; a brother: Robert E. Justis and wife, Sue, Mabank, Texas; eight grandchildren, Andrew Sprock, Rachel Privett, Angela Sprock Freed, Jeffry Sprock, Joshua Sprock, Aaron Sprock, Genna McQueen and Sarah Phillips; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, John; four sisters, Josephine Waggoner, Durrillee Slate, Joyce Stallings and Joy Harill; and five brothers John, Charles, Don, Victor and Alvin.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Hays; burial in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Hays for youth camping at Camp Christy.
