Eagles go 4-1, Monarchs 3-2, at WWF

The Hays Senior Legion Eagle baseball team capped the Wild West Fest Tournament with a 5-0 win Sunday against the SC Prospects at Larks Park, while the Hays Monarchs earned two wins at Hays High School Field.
The Eagles finished 4-1 in the tourney, while the Monarchs finished 3-2. The Monarchs defeated the Colorado Bandits, 8-7, then defeated Canon City, Colo., 7-3 to move to 11-9. The Eagles are 19-12.
The Eagles got a complete game shutout from Kade Parker (3-1), who gave up four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Hays scored all five of its runs in the first inning, two coming on a two-RBI single by Hayden Hutchison. Layne Downing was perfect, going 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. The other two runs were driven in by Marcus Altman and John Griffith.
The Eagles will travel to Kansas City this week for another tournament, spanning five days beginning Wednesday.
The Monarchs scored three runs in the third and fourth in their win against the Bandits on Sunday, then held off a fifth-inning rally to pick up the victory. Kameron Schmidt earned the complete-game win.
He allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Pierce Schippers, Shane Zimmerman and Taylor Wasinger each drove in two runs. The Monarchs' nine hits were all singles.
Against Canon City again scored three runs in the third and fourth and took a 7-1 lead into the seventh before they gave up two runs. Cameron Brin got the win in six innings. He started the seventh but didn't record an out before Braiden Werth finished it. Werth had a good game offensively. He was 3 for 3 with two runs scored an RBI. Jordan Gottschalk and Zimmerman each drove in a pair of runs.
