Rabies cases reported in Ellis County

There have been two confirmed cases of rabid animals in Ellis County in recent weeks, Health Administrator Butch Schlyer said at Monday's county commission meeting.
Two cats have been confirmed rabid, and additional animal bite incidents are under examination. Following an animal bite, proper treatment is recommended, Schlyer said.
"There are some cases on the ground," he said. "There's been numerous bites, so we always recommend they go through the proper post-exposure treatment."
There currently is one individual undergoing this treatment, and there are cases pending to determine whether two additional animals are rabid following bite incidents, Schlyer said.
One of these animals is a dog and the other is a fox, which bit when an individual tried to free it from a fence, he said.
