Police remove dozen dogs from home

Hays police seized 12 dogs from a residence Thursday after it was discovered they were living in unhealthy conditions.

Lt. Don Scheibler said police received a complaint of a "foul odor" coming from a home in the 200 block of East 19th. The smell, he said, was believed to be animal-related.

Animal Control officers responded and removed 12 Chihuahuas from the "unsanitary" environment they were being kept in, Scheibler said.

No charges were filed in the case, in return for the owner's cooperation in surrendering the animals to police.

Four of the dogs have since been turned over to the Humane Society of the High Plains. The other eight were taken to the Animal Health Center.

Scheibler said the animals appear to be in good health and will be made available for adoption.
