Tigers set for Saturday scrimmage

Last Saturday, third-year Fort Hays State University football coach Chris Brown was asked who had impressed the most in spring. Brown went through a litany of players on both sides of the ball, including several Tigers who redshirted last fall. On Saturday, FHSU concludes the spring season with the annual Spring Game at Lewis Field Stadium. Start time is 10 a.m.
Wide receiver Alex Schmidtberger, a redshirt freshman, was the first name Brown mentioned.
"He has done a great job on the outside for us," Brown said.
Safety Michael Jordan, the only returning all-MIAA player, is out for the spring. Brown said Stephen Marcotte has "really come around" in Jordan's place. On the defensive line, Brown has been impressed with two transfers, junior Tomasi Molesi and Brandon Walther. As well, Brown said Basil Bandy, a starter last season after he took a medical redshirt in 2011, has also played well at defensive end. Mario Abundez and Matt Erbert have impressed the most on the offensive line.
"Jeremy Jones and the linebacking corps has done a good job as well," Brown said. "Offensively, the backs have really stepped up and done a good job. (Tight end) Zack Gaughan has done pretty good for us and a couple of young receivers, they are starting to figure it out and have done a good job for us.
(Quarterback) Treveon Albert is getting better everyday. If he keeps doing what he is doing in practice, he is going to be pretty impressive for us."
