OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team saw its season end at the MIAA conference tournament Friday.
Fort Hays had won its first two games Thursday in the double-elimination tournament, but lost two contests Friday. Fort Hays fell 2-0 to Emporia State University, ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II and undefeated in MIAA play. Then, the Tigers lost 14-5 in five innings to Missouri Western State University, ranked No. 21 in Division II. The Tigers finished 31-19, for a .620 winning percentage, second-best since the program was restarted in 1999.
In Game 1, junior ace right-hander Maddie Holub -- who pitched two complete games Thursday -- allowed two runs on six hits in the loss. Fort Hays had just one scoring chance against ESU starter Karley Schmelzer (17-7). FHSU had runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but couldn't score. Holub finished the season at 19-9.
Against Western, Fort Hays decided to go with junior Kaitlyn Shattleroe (8-5).
The right-hander again struggled and allowed three earned runs before she collected an out. Freshman Abby Morrison pitched five relief innings and permitted 11 runs on 13 hits. Senior first baseman Adriana Wortley hit two homers, while Holub added one.
