Smoking furnace prompts call for fire crews

Hays Police closed a two-block section of Main Street this morning after smoke was reported in the Meckenstock building at 1407 Main.

The smoke apparently was coming from a blower motor on the building furnace, according to Hays Fire Capt. Chris Stegman.

He said the building was evacuated and then 911 was called, alerting officials.

Power to the motor was shut off, and fans were used to rid the building of smoke.

Meckenstock is located a block south of the fire department. The call came in about 10:30 a.m.
