Hays High swimming team places fifth

MANHATTAN -- The Hays High School boys' swimming team broke a record, set a new qualifying time and finished fifth Saturday at the Manhattan swim meet.
Senior Connor Hess qualified for state in the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 23.27 seconds.
The 400 freestyle relay team, composed of senior Blake Mathews, sophomore Morgan Mathews, senior Joshua Brungardt and senior Derek Drees, set a school record with a time of 3:35.52. The previous record was set in 1994.
Drees posted Hays High's lone top-three finish at the ultra-competitive meet. He finished third in the 50 freestyle in 22.91 seconds.
