HHS swimmers finish fifth

MAIZE -- The Hays High School boys' swimming team finished fifth out of 11 teams Saturday at the Maize Invitational.
The Indians had eight top-six finishes.
Senior Blake Mathews was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.08 and anchored the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.79), whose other members included sophomore Morgan Mathews, senior Connor Hess and senior Cade Sharp.
Senior Derek Drees was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 24.06 and 100 butterfly in 1:02.49.
The 200 medley relay (Drees, Hess, junior Austin Chambers and senior Joshua Brungardt) was fifth in 1:56.19, and Hess was sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.90.
Hays High posted two new qualifying/consideration times for the state meet at Maize, improving its list of state qualifiers to seven and one consideration time.
The 400 freestyle relay, whose members included Drees, Brungardt, Blake Mathews and junior Austin Chambers, qualified for state with a fifth-place finish in 3:50.15.
Chambers posted a consideration time in the 100 breaststroke, placing fifth in 1:16.16.
