The HRC office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Open gym hours

Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m.

HRC programs take priority over open gym time.

A gym schedule is updated weekly and is available each Friday in the office or on the website.

Mastering the art of "Mommy" -- Homemade baby food

Are you a first-time mom or just need a refresher course? Join Elaine Rupp and Joan Dunn for a session on beginning solids and what to expect. You will learn how to prepare fresh wholesome baby food in your own kitchen. Quick, easy and made with love. Let's give it a taste. Entry fee: Free. Date: April 23. Music Sparks: Sharing spring

We'll explore all things spring (plants, birds and the sun to name a few) in songs, chants and dance with the grandfriends. Entry fee: $25 for four weeks. Dates: Mondays, April 29 to May 20. Time: 10:30 to 11:10 a.m. Ages: 18 months to 5 years with an adult. Location: Cedar View Assisted Living. Limitations: minimum four, maximum eight. Fairy tales

Each week we will read a different classic fairy tale and watch it come to life through crafts and activities. Entry fee: $10. Dates: Wednesdays, April 24 to May 15. Times: Session 1, 9:15 to 10 a.m.; Session 2, 10:15 to 11 a.m. Ages: Session 1, 2 to 3 years (2 years with an adult); Session 2, 3 to 5 years. Location: HRC. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

Zumbatomic for kids

Zumbatomic is a fun and healthy program designed just for kids using the Zumba concept. Zumbatomic is designed with specific methods, music and programming specifically for children. Children will learn fitness dances, play fun motivational games, and learn new rhythm and styles of music and culture. Entry fee: $6. Dates: Wednesdays, April 24 to May 15. Time: 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5. Location: HRC. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12.

Be a book cook: Pancakes

Learn to love reading, cooking and healthy nutrition when you become a book cook. This new class from the Ellis County Extension office links a favorite storybook with a fun cooking experience. Enjoy a story about how pancakes are made, then mix up your own pancake mix and cook up some fresh pancakes for tasting. Extension Agent Linda Beech will be the class instructor. Pancake mix and recipes will be available to take home. Parents are welcome to attend and assist. Entry fee: $3. Date: April 22. Times: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Ages: 7 to 10. Location: HRC. Home schoolers belonging to ECHSN, enjoy the gym for games/movement and the classroom for art activities. Let this be a time for some social and recreation activities. Basic artisan bread

A golden brown crust that's crisp yet chewy. A creamy white crumb with a distinctive taste and texture. Come learn this amazingly easy method for artisan-style homemade bread. We'll make boules (rounds), baguettes and pita bread. In this hands-on class, you will leave with a freshly baked loaf and a container of dough for four more. Bring a 10 to 12-cup lidded container that will fit comfortably in your fridge. Entry fee: $20. Date: April 27. Time: 10 a.m. to noon. Ages: 18 and older. Location: HRC. Follies trip

The time is 1971, and theatrical impresario Dimitri Weissmann hosts a reunion of ex-Follies performers in his crumbling theater, setting the stage for a parade of brilliant '20s, '30s and '40s pastiche numbers that have become every bit as famous as their models -- "Losing My Mind," "I'm Still Here" and "Broadway Baby" to name a few. We will dine at Hong Kong Buffet before the show. Your meal is not included in your fee. Entry fee: $30. Date: April 21. Time: 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Ages: 55 and older. Location: HRC. Pie socials are designed for fun and friendship. Join us for great homemade pie, game of cards and lively conversation. Entry fee: $2. Date: Friday. Time: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Ages: 55 and older. Location: HRC. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 15.

Recreational baseball league

Youth recreational baseball is offered to boys ages 7 to 13. Late registration will be accepted until teams are filled ($5 late fee applies). Leagues might have to be altered depending upon registration numbers. Entry fee: $30. Practices start week of May 6. Games start week of May 27. ges: 7 to 13 (as of June 1). Coaches meeting: 7 p.m. April 30. Leagues offered: 7 and 8 (coach pitch); 8 and 9 (pitching machine); 9 and 10 (player pitch) 11 to 13 (player pitch).

K-18 baseball league

The K-18 baseball league is a traveling baseball program for boys, ages 13 to 15, as of May 1. Participants will travel to surrounding communities, as well as host games. All participants will be responsible for providing their own baseball glove and shoes. All practices will be in Hays. Entry fee: $50. Practices start: TBA. Games start: TBA. Ages: 13 to 15 (as of May 1).

Recreational slow pitch softball league

Sign up today for a summer of softball and fun. USSSA Softball is offered to girls ages 7 to 14. Late registration will be accepted until teams are filled ($5 late fee applies).
