HRC office hours

The HRC office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Wednesdays, when the office is open until 6 p.m. The HRC phone number is (785) 623-2650.

Fall/winter open gym hours

8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday

8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

1 to 5 p.m. Sunday

HRC programs take priority over open gym time. A gym schedule is updated weekly and is available each Friday in the office or on the Web page.

Wednesday deadline

Funny fingers, tickley toes

Fingers and toes make fascinating and educational playthings. In addition to the joy it brings, music is also important to a child's development though exposure to new words and patterns. The class will look at picture books, learn sign language and enjoy fun art activities. We will also use finger play to development their fine motor skills. New activities each week. Entry fee: $10. Date: Wednesdays Nov. 4 to 25. Times: 11:30 a.m. to noon Ages: 9 months to 18 months with an adult. Location: Recreation Center. Limitation: minimum five, maximum 10.

ABCs and 123s

Help your preschooler retain and maybe learn more letters and numbers. Letters and numbers will be presented in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. We will play letter and number bingo, magic carpet letters, crafts, shaving cream, playdough and more during this class. Children will have fun and remember those all important skills needed for school. The instructor is a licensed Early Childhood teacher. Entry fee: $20. Date: Fridays Nov. 6 to Dec. 11. Times: 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Ages: 4 and 5. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum 10, maximum 15. Instructor: Sandra Henningsen.

Busy body

Join the fun of making crafts, reading stories, cooking projects, gym play and tumbling during this four-week session. This is a great way to interact with kids of the same age. Entry fee: $10. Date: Wednesdays Nov. 4 to Nov. 25. Times and ages: 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., 2- to 3-year-olds; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., 3- to 5-year-olds. Location: Recreation Center. Limitation: minimum five, maximum 12.

Using books

Bring your child and help them learn to listen to a story, follow along and remember what the story is about with activities that pertain to the story. We will use the following stories: "Very Busy Spider," "Officer Buckle and Gloria," "1 Fish 2 Fish Red Fish Blue Fish," "Leo the Late Bloomer," and "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse." Your child will have fun listening and then seeing how much fun it can be to make the story come to life. Entry fee: $20. Date: Wednesdays Nov. 4 to Dec. 9. Times and ages: Session 1, 6:15 to 7 p.m., 3 years old with an adult; session 2, 7 to 7:45 p.m., 4- to 5-year-olds. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 15. Social Security workshop

When should I file for Social Security? What will I get? Take a closer look at the program that affects nearly every American. You pay into it all of your life, so see what the benefits are and how to file for them. The manager of the Hays Social Security office will take you through an explanation of the program and lead a discussion that should answer all your questions. Entry fee: Free. Date: Nov. 6. Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 30. Instructor: James Feyerherm.

Girls night out

Make entertaining easy. Make a variety of appetizers, starters and specialty drinks to serve at your next party or get-together. Find out how hosting a party can be fun and hassle-free with do-ahead items. Enjoy making and sampling some of these tasty treats. Bring your friends out and be ready to take home samples with you after your night of fun. Bring a container to class for samples to take home. Entry fee: $10. Date: Friday. Time: 6 to 8 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Location: Recreation Center. Limitations: minimum five, maximum 12
