Hays Jr. Legion completes season with 1-2 record at state tournament

PITTSBURG -- The Hays Junior Legion baseball team lost 6-1 to the Salina Eagles Sunday morning in an elimination game at the Class A state tournament.

With the loss, Hays finished its season 1-2 at state and 24-15 overall.

On Saturday night, Hays lost 11-4 to Shawnee Mission in the winners' bracket. Hays opened the tourney on Friday with a 9-4 win over Lansing.

Against Salina, Hays took a 1-0 lead on Dan Braun's RBI single in the second inning against winning pitcher Blake Gregory. Salina scored four runs in the second off Hays starter and loser Tyler Wooldridge. James Casey's RBI single tied the game, and Salina took the lead on a three-run double by Gerardo Santiago. Salina added two runs in the sixth on another RBI single by Casey and an RBI groundout by Clayton Commerford.

On Saturday against Shawnee Mission, Hays starter Trevor Henningsen didn't make it out of the second inning, allowing seven runs.

Shawnee Mission added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth in a 16-hit attack.

Hays was held to four hits.

The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth.
