PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) -- The old Jefferson Highway was the first transcontinental road to traverse the North American continent from north to south, and possibly the first dedicated international highway in the world.
So why is it nearly forgotten while Route 66, not nearly so historic or as long, is still celebrated with festivals and tons of memorabilia?
Some enthusiasts recently started a trip along the old Jefferson Highway, which cuts through parts of Kansas and Missouri before ending in New Orleans.
Along the way, they're educating locals about its significance and how it was built. Many people don't know the roadway was built without federal funds, instead financed by private and municipal money.
Notes taken by the travelers are being posted online.
