School funding advocates discussing options

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A group that advocates for more state funding for education continues to add more school districts, but no decision has been made on whether to sue the Legislature.

Attorney John Robb said Thursday that Schools for Fair Funding now includes 67 school districts, representing 165,586 students.

Robb, who is based in Newton, says the group has been discussing another lawsuit against the state, but is waiting to see if more districts get involved.

The group's last lawsuit resulted in a Kansas Supreme Court ordering the Legislature to spend more on public schools. But current budget problems have again prompted major cuts to state education funding.
